Local search basics: help nearby customers find your business
The simple, free steps that help nearby customers find your business online, with no tricks and no promises about rankings.
Local search basics for small business owners start here. When someone nearby searches for a service you offer, search engines try to show the most relevant, trustworthy local businesses. No one can promise you a particular position in those results, and you should be wary of anyone who does. What you can do is make it easy for search engines and customers to understand what you do, where you do it and why you are trustworthy. These are the basics, and most of them are free.
Claim your Google Business Profile
A Google Business Profile is the panel that can appear with your hours, phone number, photos and reviews when someone searches for your business or your service nearby. Google states that creating a Business Profile and listing your business is free.
- Claim or create your profile and complete the verification Google asks for.
- Choose the category that best describes your main service.
- Add your service area or address, hours, phone number and website.
- Add real photos of your work and keep adding new ones.
- Keep holiday hours up to date.
Keep your details consistent everywhere
Your business name, phone number and address (if customers visit you) should read the same on your website, your Google profile, directories, invoices and social pages. Inconsistent details confuse customers and make it harder to tell that two listings are the same business. Pick one format and use it everywhere.
Earn reviews honestly
Reviews help customers decide, and they help search engines understand your reputation.
- Ask happy customers for a review, and make it easy with a direct link.
- Reply to reviews, good and bad, politely and briefly.
- Never buy reviews, write your own or offer rewards for positive ones. Platforms prohibit it, and it can break consumer protection rules.
Make your website clear about what and where
Your website supports your profile. Describe each service in plain words, name the towns you serve and make your phone number easy to tap. Give each page a clear title. Our guide to what to include on a small business website covers the details, and every Sites by Digit plan includes the technical groundwork.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a different business name or phone number on different sites.
- Listing a home address you do not want customers to visit; use a service area instead.
- Stuffing your business name with keywords, which platforms prohibit and customers notice.
- Creating separate pages for towns you do not really serve.
Be patient and keep it current
Local search rewards businesses that are real, active and accurate. Update your hours, add photos of recent work and keep collecting honest reviews. Changes can take weeks to show, and no step on this page works overnight.
